It’s been said that for the average person, network marketing is the best path to wealth. If that’s the case, why do 95% of distributors fail to build successful businesses? In reality, the top 5% consists primarily of those who already have the recipe for success. They have contacts, skill and personality developed from previous success in life. So the reality is, in most cases the average person simply does not have the ingredients for success in the business. But it doesn’t have to be that way; there is a recipe for the masses.

It amazes me that as much as the Internet has changed the face of marketing, network marketing has primarily remained old school. Yes, websites and online video have replaced tapes, cds and brochures to some extent, but the old tired methods remain the same. Distributors are still taught to create a list, bug their friends and family, and invite them to watch a video or attend a meeting. With the same old school methods, the modern tools still do little to increase the likelihood of success—for the average person.

Despite the failure of most networking marketing companies to provide a formula of success to the average distributor, there are a handful of entrepreneurs who have discovered the recipe for success on their own. They have studied the Internet, learned what successful Internet marketers are doing, and then tailored those strategies to network marketing. For the few who have managed to create their own Internet based formulas, their success has been staggering.

Mike Ray’s company told him that it was not possible to build his organization online; he should follow his upline and do what they do. They advised him to hold meetings and share the plan. It is imperative before you ever make a phone call or mention your business to another person that you learn what truly motivates you and what compelled you to join the business. We call this your Why. You must know why you are in this business before you know how to do the business.

It is important to be realistic about this business. It isn’t always going to be easy. We know you may be so excited right now that it may be difficult to understand that. However, you will become frustrated even if you are the most successful network marketer in history. It’s how a person deals with those frustrations that determines their long-term success. People often give up on their dreams when success was just around the corner.

How do you make it through these times of frustration? Your Why is what will sustain you and motivate you when everything else says quit. Your Why is what will carry you through the muck. Your Why is your very personal, yet powerful reason that will help you rise up and climb to the top.

When you achieve success, which you will if you stay the course, your Why will become part of your story which you will share and will inspire others.

Your Why is not as simple as money, as important as money is. Your Why resides in your heart and in your soul. It is absolutely what is most important to you.

When you learn what your Why is, you will have committed your entire self to success and your business. You will be able to overcome all obstacles in your way and navigate the course even when it gets dark.

Write down why you are in your opportunity of choice. Make a list of 15 of the things that motivate you most. It may be you want to be able to leave your job and be have more time with your family. It may be that your dream and ultimate goal is to be able to devote yourself to charitable causes. It may be you want your parents to be able to enjoy their retirement years. Remember that your Why isn’t money, but it may very well be what can come from having an abundance of it.

After you’ve created your list eliminate the one thing you can do without. Continue this process until you have only one left. You may discover in this process that a few of the things you’ve wrote down are connected. Once you have that one clear reason you became involved in this business, formulate it into a simple and unmistakable sentence. You have your Why. Never forget it!

This Idea came from one of my Partners/Founding Distributors in my Primary Business and I have added to it. He used this approach in a previous company to become one of the top distributors and make a very good residual income that he still benefits from.

It starts with making a decision, or the decision, that Network Marketing is something that you really truly want to do. This decision is based on the fact that it will become a part of your lifestyle and a part of who you are. It is very difficult to share your opportunity with only some of your circle of influence and be successful. Your decision has to start with you and become a part of who you are. If you have not made that decision I suggest you make it and get going or move to another industry.

Once you have made the decision, you are bound to have naysayers and negative reactions from close friends/family and maybe even a spouse or trusted friend. You will and should at some point explain to them that this is what you have decided to do and that you do not appreciate their negativity-Tactfully I should add. People may not agree with your decision but if you are honest, frank and passionate about your opportunity, they will respect you. Respect is key in this industry.

Showing not just telling people that you have made the Decision. After you have made the decision to work your main opportunity as a network Marketer, and told people that you are going to do it, you need to show everyone that you are going to do it. I have a few suggestions on what you could do, but in reality you need to come up with you own. After I made the decision I decided to sacrifice some of the things that I really wanted to do to work the business. I gave up time doing the things that I loved and am passionate about to work my opportunity so that eventually I could spend more time doing those things. It’s funny but in that process I found and learned about new passions that I hadn’t yet previously had-I.E. Networking Marketing, Meeting New Peoples, Sharing my opportunity. Hopefully you get the idea.

Lastly, you need to do it. Once you have made the decision, gotten rid of negativity, told people you were going to do it, sacraficed the time/money/energy to do it, you need to just do it. Wake up early to send emails, Gather phone numbers to start calling, take a shorter lunch to stop by businesses, Become the type of person that people want to be associated in this industry. There are effective and ineffective ways to do things. Find people that are successful and be like them, read the books they read, listen to what they listen to. I don’t need to go into all the details in this article about how to leverage your efforts but hopefully you get the point I am trying to make, which is Decide in your heart and mind that this is what you are going to do.

So to help you on your way I am going to give one suggestion called the MCC 500.

Somewhere in your house where you look everyday right down the Number 500 on a whiteboard Mirror or somewhere to remind yourself. Each day try and get 1-3 meaningful connections and conversations about your opportunity. The great thing about this exercise is that you will be the judge on whether or not the MCC qualifies. Is it someone coming to a meeting, a great phone call, handing out a business card, holding a meeting, dropping your product off at a friends house, either way you decide what a MCC is. If a MCC qualifies you erase the 500 and put a 499 and so on and so on until you are down to zero. I guarantee that if you are holding yourself true to the decision that you made, that when you get to this point you will have a successful business if you have chosen a successful Network Marketing Company.

The Key is to make the MCC’s as meaningful as possible. In the next post we will discuss a few ways to do this.

A common question among retirees is: When to start taking Social Security payment? Should they start as soon as they retire, or wait for more money?

A general rule in finance is to take money as soon as you can get it (because the time value of money gives a higher value to money now than in the future). However, there can be two good reasons to delay payments:

First, if you expect your income to drop (maybe you have a note from the sale of property or a pension that ceases), you may benefit by a lower tax bracket in the future. Therefore, it might make sense to defer your Social Security income until then.

Second, there may be a benefit to a spouse. Say the husband has a pension that stops at his death. The couple’s income with the pension is comfortable, and they don’t need the Social Security income. The longer they wait to begin taking Social Security, the higher the benefit. By deferring the income, the surviving spouse gets a larger check when the husband dies. (Of course, this option must be offset against getting the benefits earlier, paying tax, and reinvesting the after tax amount)
